How to apply for a NIF in Portugal and what documents are needed

Practical Guide: How to Apply for a NIF

Planning to live, work, or invest in Portugal? The NIF (Tax Identification Number) is your essential first step. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, sign contracts, or handle legal matters. The process is straightforward and free.

What is the NIF and why do you need it?
Issued by the Tax and Customs Authority (AT), the NIF is a unique nine-digit code required to:

  • Open bank accounts and sign employment or lease agreements.
  • Apply for residence permits and process tax declarations.
  • Set up utility contracts (water, electricity, internet, mobile).

How to Apply for a NIF?

  • 1. In-Person (Within Portugal): At any Tax Office (Serviço de Finanças) or Citizen’s Shop (Loja do Cidadão). Prior booking is recommended via (+351) 217 206 707 (weekdays, 9 AM – 7 PM). Issued immediately.
  • 2. Online or From Abroad (Via Tax Representative): Non-EU/EEA non-residents must apply through a tax representative residing in Portugal via the Tax Authority’s e-counter (e-balcão).

Required Documents:

  • Foreign Resident Citizens: Valid Passport/ID + EU Citizen Registration Certificate or Residence Permit.
  • Foreign Non-Resident Citizens: Valid Passport/ID + Entry visa (if applicable) + Tax Representative appointment document.
  • Foreign Minors: Birth certificate or official record of birth.

Cost & Verification:

  • Cost: 100% free directly through the Tax Authority.
  • Verification: Log in to the Portal das Finanças to view your profile or download an official PDF proof of NIF.
